WRT54G V1.0 + 1.42.2 FW

After upgrading to the new FW (foolish of me) from 1.30.7 I am no longer
able to connect to SBC Yahoo! DSL.

Tried hard reset, etc. Works fine with an old BEFW11S4 I have so I know
it's not SBC. I tried downgrading the FW to 1.30.7 but it gives me a
"cannot downgrade" error.

Has anyone else seen a problem with 1.42.2? Anyone know if there's a way to
downgrade the FW?

This may seem too simplistic...but have you gone into your router via
the web page and reentered your PPOE username and password?

The firmware upgrade wipes that stuff out, in my experience (as well as
the admin password if memory serves me).

1.42.2 does fix some things (such as WPA) but breaks others (which I why I'm
back to 1.41.2).

Downgrade to the european 1.41.8 firmware; then downgrade to whatever
version you want. You can probably find this firmware with Google or by
searching www.dslreports.com for people who have it. If you e-mail Linksys'
tech support, they should be also able to send it to you.

A hard reset will erase all of your settings, so you may have to change
something to get the router to work with DSL.

Yves, do you happen to know what aspects of WPA are fixed in 1.42.2?
I ask because I'm having problems getting WPA working with this router
and it's currently at v1.41.2. It sounds like I might find some joy
at the latest level....

Second, can you say what broke in that jump so I know what I'll be
sacrificing to get there?

Thanks so much for your helpful additions to this thread!

Best Regards,

Under 1.42.2, I could actually connect to the WRT54G with WPA under 802.11b
(I use a Linksys WPC11v3 card) and the B-Only mode worked (selecting B-Only
in the past made it impossible to connect to the router with 802.11b). With
versions prior to 1.42.2, attempting to connect to the router with WPA-PSK
caused the router to lock up (requiring a power cycle to restart it).

The problem for me with 1.42.2 is that the network connection fails every
few minutes (and Linksys has acknowledged this as a bug with that firmware).
WPA-PSK actually seems more tolerant of this than WEP or no encryption since
the wireless network unavailable message usually does not pop up (however,
there is an entry for the event in the system log). Every few hours, the
network connection fails long enough that I have to manually reselect the
network. In the meantime, the computer is unable to access the network.
Thus, I cannot leave my computer unattended. For the time being, I'm
sticking with 128-bit WEP and 1.41.2 and am just going to assume that nobody
will want to break into my network since there are two or three open
networks in neighboring appartments.

Yep, sure did. Got nothing to do with that.

Ah ha! I can confirm that bug!! Saw it last night with 1.41.2

OK, I found the FW, but aren't I going to get the same msg when I try to
downgrade 1.42.2? Meaning can't downgrade it?

The FTP server for Linksys has a new 1.42.3 firmware available. However,
the version information has not yet been made available. I'll try
installing it later. Perhaps they fixed the disconnect bug...

Of course, looking at the older version information file for 1.42.2 shows no
indication that they fixed the B-Only/G-Only and WPA-PSK bugs (Firmware
Version 1.42.2; Updated wireless driver to 3.31.15; Added URL and contents
filters; Added L2TP passthrough; Added HeartBeat Signal support; Resolved
issue with Connect on Demand).
