Under 1.42.2, I could actually connect to the WRT54G with WPA under 802.11b
(I use a Linksys WPC11v3 card) and the B-Only mode worked (selecting B-Only
in the past made it impossible to connect to the router with 802.11b). With
versions prior to 1.42.2, attempting to connect to the router with WPA-PSK
caused the router to lock up (requiring a power cycle to restart it).
The problem for me with 1.42.2 is that the network connection fails every
few minutes (and Linksys has acknowledged this as a bug with that firmware).
WPA-PSK actually seems more tolerant of this than WEP or no encryption since
the wireless network unavailable message usually does not pop up (however,
there is an entry for the event in the system log). Every few hours, the
network connection fails long enough that I have to manually reselect the
network. In the meantime, the computer is unable to access the network.
Thus, I cannot leave my computer unattended. For the time being, I'm
sticking with 128-bit WEP and 1.41.2 and am just going to assume that nobody
will want to break into my network since there are two or three open
networks in neighboring appartments.
