WRT54G Linksys Router and B-only Network Mode?

Just the other day I attempted to enabled B-ONLY (regardless of
channel) network mode on my WRT54G however my 802.11b device was then
unable to detect the network. However, when I change to MIXED mode I
had no problems at all -- even with SSID broadcast disabled, WEP 128
bit encryption enabled and MAC address filtering. Has anyone else
been able to get b-only mode to work on this router?

I tried several times to get g-only working, and it would only work in mixed
mode for me.

Maybe it's a problem with the unit? Maybe it works best in mixed mode no
matter what you use?

I saw the same thing you did - In b-only mode, no connection...

I wanted to add that my new unit came with firmware 1.41.2

Try the 1.42.2 firmware. B-Only now works so maybe G-Only will work too.

Alas, the "ping hack" has been disabled, so it's not possible to mess
with the transmit power. I'm going to wait a bit to upgrade . . . hopefully
someone will find a workaround

Thanks for letting me know - 1.42.2 wasn't out the last time I checked
(only 1.42.1) - but ironically after I sent several messages to
Linksys support this last week, it's interesting that they suddenly
release this version.

Are there any REQUIRED steps that need to be taken to effectively
upgrade firmware if you use the .EXE version? Was hoping to not lose
all my settings if possible but if I must in order to upgrade
correctly, I guess I'll just deal with it

Thanks.

Upgrading the firmware has not led to any lost settings for me -- so far.
