I've got a WRT54G router here and i just noticed the Internet and
'Ethernet 1' LEDs blinking fast as strobe lights. Is this normal?

Not normal. They might flash ocassionally or more often when you're
doing something on the internet, but not continuously. That means
whatever computah you have plugged into port 1 is either downloading a
bunch of stuff from the internet (assorted updates), or spewing crap
all over the internet because your computer is infected with a virus
or worm. Update your virus scanner and scan your machine for virus's.
