WRT54G installation problem

I have recently bought an Linksys WRT54G router and having problems
setting it up:
I can't connect to it from wired PC from the start.

I assume it has default IP address set to 192.168.1.1: I did several
long resets and power cycles, so I hope it has restored factory
settings.

I have IP on a PC set to 192.168.1.100 as described in troubleshooting
guide with 255.255.255.0 subnet mask and 192.168.1.1 as a gateway.

When I ping 192.168.1.1 I get 'request timed out' ('host unreachable'
if I unplug network cable).
Also I can't update firmware: I get 'can't connect to router' or 'can
not find server' from update utility downloaded from linksys.com.

Sometimes power LEDs is blinking, sometimes not.
Sometimes I get strange repeative blinking from all of the LAN leds
(1,2,3,4 and Internet LEDs).
When all LEDs blinking, my network connection icon goes to state
'unlinked' then 'linked' repeatedly.

I use WRT54G model without DIAG LED and Windows XP Pro on a PC.

Can anyone help me with this problem since Linksys techsupport just
ignores my messages?

Return it. It appears dead. If you can't get a wired router working
right out of the box with DHCP set on the client computer, the router is
failed. That is, if the ethernet is enabled on the computer and works
and you are using a straight through cable that works?

Check the speed of your computer's ethernet port. I ran into the same issue
and somehow it got bumped up to 100 megabit from 10. Once I changed it back
to 10 everything worked fine.

Yes, ethernet is enabled. Also it works fine when I change ip settings
and connect it to another PC using cross-cable.

And I have checked not only straight cable which came with the router,
but also two other cables.

I tried to change the speed to 10 Mb Half duplex and even tried
another, 10 Mb ethernet card on this PC and 100 Mb on other PC.

Did not helped.

Problem solved by changing faulty power adapter.
