Has anyone tried flashing a WRT54G/GS v5, v6

I heard that it would require a hardware modification, but I found this
website

the other day saying it could be done without hardware modifications.
Has anyone done this? What are the risks of a snafu? Best yet what are
your thoughts on doing this?
