WRT54G drops wireless connection

About a week ago we set up a WRT54G system to share our cable modem
connection. There are 3 wireless devices; a WET-11 ethernet bridge and two
PC's with D-Link wireless cards. Everything has been working fine until
this morning.

On 3 separate occasions, all computers lost the wireless link when a
computer on the LAN was powered up or off. In the first case it was
triggered by powering up the PC that is wired to the WRT54G ethernet port.
In the other 2 cases it was triggered by powering down computers with
wireless connections elsewhere in the house.

We are using WEP, DHCP, and are running in mixed (B/G) mode. Not using
WPA. Firmware is V1.41.2

Powering down the router and connected computer did not immediately fix
the problem; however it resolved "auto-magically" about 30 minutes after
each occurrence. I'm still scratching my head.

My initial impulse was to update the firmware, but I've read reports here
that firmware > 1.41.2 does not allow downgrade, and has other problems.

Any ideas?

Depending on the version of hardware you have 1.42.3 or 2.00.8 is the latest. I
would certainly try it and see if it resolves the problem. It is possible to
downgrade - you just have to load an intermediate version of firmware.

If you don't want to upgrade because of the ping hack going away, there's a guy
in the DSLReports forum that is posting cutom versions of firmware that restores
that capability.

I'm curious... Can you use the 2.x firmware with the older 1.0
router?

My WRT54G is of hardware revision V1.1, and I recently updated it with
Linksys' U.S. website Revision 2.00.8 firmware release, and I have not seen
any problem since the update (for about 2 weeks), though I didn't notice any
improvement, either.
