WRT54G / client mode

Hi everyone

I'm subscribing to a local Wireless Broadband provider, and have been
asked to set my Linksys WRT54G to "client mode"

I have spoken with Linksys support, who say that this is "not possible"
with the Access Point/Router, and that I need a pure Linksys Access
Point only. I only bought the WRTS54G as it offered other functions, not
just an Access Point!

Can anyone please confirm/deny that the WRTS54G cannot operate in Client
Mode before I have to resort to trying to return the WRT54G to the shop
I bought it from (which I don't really want to try)

TIA
Andy Medcalf

True. See for yourself by going to the web interface. There is no configuration
option for the mode of the WRT54G - it will always act as a router and not as a
client. If you don't want to open the box, you can go to the Linksys web site
and download the manual...

You can't set this router to be a wireless client.

I'm not sure how your ISP works though; do they actually broadcast
wireless signals direct to your home? Or is it a cable or DSL
provider?

There is a third party image that can do this - or something very
similar...check out this site:

http://www.sveasoft.com/modules.php?...file=viewforum

that may not take you directly to the product, but you can find it from
there, and see a lot of
discussion about their product on the LinkSys box...

Forgive me Clark, but couldn't you just set the router to gateway only
mode in firmware, disable DHCP and plug in the static IP numbers to make
it a client? Or no? I've never had reason for doing this, but sounds
like fun.

There is no such mode selection... At least not on my WRT54G.

It's a community broadband wireless Mesh network, so effectively they
want my Access Point to act as another client AP on the wireless
network. Unfortunately, it "appears" that the WRT54G - even though it's
an Access Point - cannot be put into Client Mode which it seems is what
I need. Linksys tell me I need a "dedicated" Access Point. Unless I can
use the 3rd Party Firmware as mentioned by Kevin.

Another way - perhaps I could get a wireless bridge and connect this via
crossover cable to my WRT54G to distribute the broadband network around
the machines in my house - is this a technically viable approach?

Thanks for everyone's time with this - if anyone can help me I'd be
grateful for any further input

Regards
Andy

In Setup / Advanced Routing I see a drop down with two options -
"Gateway" and "Router" operating mode. Or is this different?

Cheers
Andy

Son of a gun. I knew the routing stuff was there, but overlooked the mode
select. Learn something new every day. Thanks!

Right, that's exactly what I was talking about. Now maybe LinkSys is
saying it doesn't work, but I don't take their word as gospel. If you
turn off DHCP and select gateway mode only, then plug in the static IP
client address(es). I would think that would work, BUT maybe someone
knows better. If time is running out on your being able to return your
router, then certainly don't hang on to it just for this experiment.
