WRT54g and Static IP Address

I've been using DHCP to get an IP from my ISP using the WRT54G for a
while now. Works great.

I just got a static IP address from my ISP.

I go into the router's config, change to Static (from DHCP), enter the
IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS entries and save settings.

After that, I get nothing. I can ping yahoo.com and get DNS resolution,
but I get no responses.

I called their tech support and they couldn't help. They checked
everything and said it should be working.

I even tried plugging directly to my PC from the modem and got the same
results.

Tried cycling everything, still didn't help.

Status and IPconfig shows the settings are correct when I tried it on
both the PC and the Router.

Is there something I'm missing?

wouldn't you have to change the TCP/IP settings for whatever Ethernet card
you are using for each PC on your network? Not sure if this is correct, but
the devices are trying to obtain an IP automatically right now, correct?

Just because you have been assigned a static IP address does not mean that
your router cannot use DHCP to get its configuration. It just means that
your ISP should always assign your router the same IP address (actually;
instruct your cable/dsl modem's DHCP server to assign that address). Try
turning DHCP on again and see if you are assigned the proper IP address.
That might fix things for now.

No, my PCs connect to the router and request LAN IPs using the router's
DHCP server.

I'm talking about the setting for the WAN... DHCP will tell the router
to get an IP from the ISP.. with static, I should be able to plug in the
values they issue.

Tried that, and I get a dynamic IP from the ISP... tech support said I
had it all set up correctly, and it should be working. All I get is DNS
resolution, no connection. Can't even ping IP addresses outside of
their network, but can ping their gateway and DNS server machines.

I understand where you're coming from with the ISP should be assigning
my static IP, but they don't do things like that I guess.

What do you mean by:
"I can ping yahoo.com and get DNS resolution, but i get no responses" ??

Your dns resolution may be a cached dns entry on your pc, so try a site
youve never been to. (lego.com or something. They likely wont return the
ping but you will see if they resolve)

When you say you can ping yahoo.com , what do you mean ? Do you get a reply
??? www.yahoo.com actually WILL return a ping.

My guess would be your isp has setup the routing wrong, or you have the
wrong subnet/gateway settings....

Well, the way that cable (and probably dsl) modems work is that they get
configured from the ISP with one or more IP addresses when you turn them on
(and every now and then after that). They assign those IP addresses to
connected computers and/or routers. You should not be able to use an IP
address that your modem is not able to assign. When your ISP sets up a
fixed IP address, your modem is always given the same IP address to assign.
Perhaps your ISP does not have the proper record for your modem.

I'll add the obvious. Have you unplugged the modem and left it off for a
couple minutes? It won't properly resolve the static IP until it is reset
(not the router, the modem).
