WRT54G & modem lockups

After not having any luck via email concerning my G router locking my cable
modem up, I decided to call tech support. The lady was very nice and when I
told her that these problems started after a firmware upgrade, she asked me
why I upgraded. I told her I wanted WPA support and thought since this
router was so new, better things were included. She then told me I
shouldn't have upgraded and each time you upgrade, you 'harm' the router
more and many times it ruins the router.
Strange since there is no mention of this on their website and I've had
other routers that I've upgraded numerous times with no problems.
Anyone ever hear of this or had similar problems?

You received a fascinating reply and rather curious advice from a company
representative of Linksys. Admittedly, upgrading firmware should not be
undertaken just as a routine activity unless there is a gain factor
involved. There is always a risk of a bad flash and restoration may or may
not be successful. Nonetheless, if a posted update addresses an issue you
have, the update should be done. As for the assertion that "upgrading the
router ruins it," that is quite bluntly, HOGWASH!

Linksys is acquiring an impaired reputation because of buggy software they
are slow to address. Some of their recent wireless units are just not stable
and even a minimal change in the configuration will force one to do a RESET
and start all over. One would think that CISCO in acquiring the Linksys Co.
would get the message.

As for D Fox in this thread, and his connection dropping malady, this is
typical of recent Linksys units. Try reducing WEP to 64 bits, and unless
your system requires IEEE 802.1XX authentication, uncheck and don't use it.
Try static addresses and uncheck "Use Windows to configure my wireless
network settings." Be sure to always check "CONNECT" in the Wireless
Network Connection window. Place the two blinking computers (eyes) in the
system tray and observe their conduct...if you have not done so.

In any case, I would discourage anyone from purchasing Linksys Wireless
units until they clean up their act. They have competitors......use them.

Good luck,

Bill

FWIW, I've completely disabled WEP, and have tried using static
ip's...same problem. I think the problem is that Linksys just sucks.

Thanks for the info but I have found the problem. It was my cable modem.
Even though my ISP at first gave me a clean bill of health, once I left my
modem connected directly to the computer for more than 1 day, the same
things happened only not as ofter. So, I took it to level 2 and they tried
a number of things before they 'assumed' it was my modem. Not wanting to
wait a week for a tech to tell me and with BestBuy having a good price on a
Toshiba 2600, I brought it home and it works fine.
Now, as for Linksys....I could not get the router to pick up the new mac
address and a call to tech and many, many different attempts, finally fixed
the mac address problem. The new modem and 2 month old router are now
working flawlessly.
I don't plan to flash again unless the upgrade is major.
Thanks again for your help.
