WRT54G and DHCP problem

I have a Linksys WRT54G which is essentially set up as an access
point/switch. We have a different device on the network acting as gateway,
firewall and DHCP server.

I have tried several wireless "G" notebook cards and have experienced
problems with the cards getting dynamic IP address.

If I use static IP addresses on the wireless cards, I have no difficulty.
If, however, I use DHCP to assign IP addresses, I start to have problems.
Sometimes the wireless cards get DHCP passed (from the DHCP server) to them
by the wireless routers, sometimes they don't and ultimately get a
169.254.xxx.xxx IP address.

I have heard that there are some issues on the Linksys routers regarding
wireless DHCP. It seems that if I enable DHCP on the routers (which I don't
want to do as it results in the wrong gateway being set on the clients), the
wireless clients do not seem to experience any problem. It's only when the
wireless router is passing DHCP from our DHCP server to our client machines.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Has anyone set up a different "G" router successfully in this manner and not
experienced problems assignments from the DHCP server?

Regards,

Peter

Have you tried the instructions in the Linksys Knowledgebase?

http://makeashorterlink.com/?B580637B5

I'm using a BEFW11S4 v3.2 in this manner and have no DHCP issues.

Yes, I set things up in that manner.

I'm simply going to try a different brand of router to see whether that
solves the problem. If not, then it's most likely a client issue, not a
router issue.

My wireless clients connected through the Linksys WAP54G can not obtain
an IP address lease from my DHCP server either. This only became an
issue when I enabled WEP ... I ended up going with static IP
addresses...

Lars, that's exactly my problem. With no encryption, I don't have a
problem. However, with WEP or WPA encryption, I have intermittent DHCP
problems. Linksys support was of no use at all and suggested it may be a
"packet jamming" issue and that I should do a hard reset on the router.
Yeah...whatever.

I'm just heading out to pick up a D-Link box to see if it solves the
problem. If so, I'll return my Linksys routers. I don't want to use static
IPs (although it's a work-around for now), because I want to be able to
switch easily between my work and home wireless networks.

Regards,

Peter

Use the "wireless configuration utility" (assumes Linksys wireless card)
to set the IP address. In your home profile, set the IP address for
home, and in the work-profile, set the IP address for work (or dhcp).
Then just select the profile depending on your location, and you'll be
all set. Since you'll need two profiles anyways ...
