I'm so sorry for confusing everyone in my previos posting. I hope
this will be posted soon enough so you will not answer the old wrong
posting.
Here is it again:
I was changing the hostname on my Linux box using GNOME. In my old
posting I said I went into programs->network configuration->hosts and
modified the line 127.0.01 localhost etc.
I didn't do that. I went into programs->network configuration->DNS
and changed
Hostname entry to the name other than localhost.localdomain.
When I rebooted my graphical interface wouldn't start. I ran startX
and went back and changed DNS->Hostaname back to
localhost.localdomain.
So my question is what's the proper way of changing hostname?
I'd like to use graphical interface to do that, but if need be I'll
just change the proper files.
Again, I'm sorry for this confusion with my old posting. I'd be more
careful next time.
Thanks

There is a command, 'hostname'. Do 'man hostname' at the console.

Cheers

Depends on which vendor's distribution. Please read

On Redhat and Mandrake startup code sets hostname and domain from the
/etc/sysconfig/network file.
