Hello NG,
i have been working with Linux for only 1 month but I have read 2 books
about it and so I think a can't call myself a "Newbie". But that doesn't
mean I could do anything without help:-)

There is a Debian Sarge machine running as server here. The kernel is
2.4 but I think that's not necessary. Now I want to add a little FTP
server for distributing some files to my friends. This is the
configuration I want:

- the base directory / of the FTP server should be /var/ftp/
- anonymous login accepted, no mail adress required
- maybe (if it's easy for you) a subdirectory /upload/ where anonymous
users can upload files, but not delete or overwrite
- 1 admin account with ALL rights
- it shouldn't be related to /etc/passwd or some other Linux file

I have asked some friends and searched for easy to read documents about
the configuration of ProFTP but didn't find help. I would write this
file myself but I do not understand the system of the proftpd.conf-file.
It is just confusing me.

I hope there is someone who has got some expierences with ProFTPd and
can write me such a file. If you prefer another FTP server I also would
install this one. No problem!

P.S. I'm sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker but try to give
my best;-)

Look at the examples in the source package. There are many well
documented configuration files from which you can start building your
own configuration.

Hello Giovanni,
i know there are some example files also on the web page. But I tried
one and I couldn't do anything -- neither anonymous nor named login.

Also I tried to expand the standard file and add my entries but I didn't
get it working.
