Looks like repeater boxes that do WDS support WEP but not WPA. Are WDS
networks then inherently not secure?

A few WDS implimentations claim to work with WPA-PSK. For example
DD-WRT supports WPA-PSK but only if you setup the network for 802.11g
only. If you enable 802.11b, you're stuck with WEP. Also, DD-WRT
does not support WPA2-PSK and does NOT work between v23 and v24
firmware.

WEP is very insecure and is easily cracked. Whether it's running with
WPS is irrelevent as anyone that can crack the WEP key, can connect to
the WDS AP/bridge.

The D-Link DWL-G700AP - really an access point - can be setup to function
as a repeater with the newer firmware and it also supports WPA-PSK (TKIP)
in repeater mode.
