Hi All: I have a Compaq laptop that is running Windows 2000. I bought
a Linksys WPC54G card so I could use the laptop at home with my
Linksys wireless router. I cannot get the WPC54G to connect to the
router and pull down an IP address. Everything works fine if I plug a
cable into the ethernet port on the back that's directly connected to
the router, but when I try to use the wireless notebook card all I can
get is a "Cable Disconnected" on LAN connection 2. I have another
desktop computer with a wireless PCI card that works fine but cannot
get this PCMCIA card to work.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Pat D

That's how XP/2k will report any network connection that is not sensed
as being connected at the data link layer. For wireless connections,
it means that the OS thinks that the card isn't connecting
(wirelessly) to the access point.

Do the usual things--make sure have the latest greatest firmware on
both, make sure you have security settings matching on the client and
access point end, make sure the access point is allowing the MAC
address of that card to connect, etc.

Best Regards,

There have been a couple of postings here by me and Lars Hanson saying
that we cannot get the 1.3 driver set to work if WEP is enabled.
I disabled WEP to test and it worked fine.
So - I reverted to the 1.21 versions of the Linksys software and WEP
works again (just means that I can't do WPA which was the reason for
going to 1.3 in the first place).

I have not had a reply (over 21 days now) to my request for support
via Linksys web site.

Moral of story - check the versions of the Linksys software ... the
latest might not be the greatest in this particular case.

Thanks Todd, I'll try that.

In case anyone else has the same problem I will share my fix
(partial). I pushed the reset button on the back of my Wireless
Linksys router and this allowed me to connect t othe router. I no
longer have the cable disconnected message. I get a great signal t
othe router but I still cannot connect t othe internet even though I
tried all the Linksys fixes via their website. Oh well, one problem at
a time.
