Does the NIC have to support WPA-PSK authentication/encryption? Or is it
purely a software protocol?

Thanks, Rob.

The nic has to have a driver that supports it, (check website for
updates)

I suspect this Edimax driver doesn't support anything but WEP. I downloaded
latest version from the website. However, it's based upon a RealTek8180 so
might be able to get a later generic driver.

Thanks, Rob.

I Believe it has to be the OS too - ie XP SP2 supports WPA.

I gave up in the end - whilst after upgrading the driver, I could select
WPA-PSK and end the passcodes, it just wouldn't work. Kept getting continual
"Acquiring network address". After reading up on this, I infer it's a common
problem with Windows XP SP2 and some routers.

I've gone for WPA which isn't quite as secure but good enough.

Rob.
