Short version: WEP 64 and 128 bit works. WPA doesn't work.

Configuration: Centrino w/ Intel 2100 card, WinXP Home, All patches up to
date, Linksys WRT54G router w/ latest firmware 1.30.7.

With Intel ProSet configuration utility loaded I was able to run both 64 bit
and 128 bit WEP. After unloading ProSet I am able to "Use Windows to
configure my wireless network settings" to configure 64 bit WEP.

Now I change the Linksys router to WPA/TKIP and enter an 8 character key.
And apply it and exit.

Immediately the laptop signals loss of communication as you would expect.

I then click on the little wireless network icon in the taskbar and delete
the old "preferred network" and configure a new one with WPA/TKIP and the
same 8 character key. Apply and wait forever...no joy.

C-A-D shows no zcfg but examination of the registry w/ regedit shows it in
place with a start variable = 2.

Dropdown boxes in the dialogs obviously indicate software capable of WPA and
TKIP.

Any suggestions?

jtm (frustrated...)

Two things to check: Is your WAP set up for 802.11b compat mode or 54G
only? The most important thing to check is whether your card's firmware
supports WPA. Since Centrino means 802.11b, and since most 802.11b
hardware don't support WPA yet, my money is on the card not WPA capable.

Card is WPA compatible with driver downloaded and applied. If I use the
Intel ProSet utility I get all the appropriate WPA/TKIP options but no joy.
I removed ProSet in order to stay out of WinXP's way.

Router is set up to allow mixed B & G.

any other ideas?

Hi,

I am not familiar with the Intel chip, but from experience working with
two different 54G cards, you need more than just the driver in order to
use WPA in Windows - you also need a component called the "supplicant".

Windows WPA patch (free download) and Odyssey client (free 30-day trial)
from funk.com are supplicants that I have tried and found to work with
WRT54G.

If you run WZC, even if your WPA preshared keys don't match but you have
the correct SSID, Windows should at least be able to detect the AP and
give you an indication of radio strength. Also, for easier
troublshooting, you may want to temporarily turn on SSID broadcast so
that WZC can pick up your AP.

Good luck.

As indicated below I've downloaded Q815845 for WinXP and applied it. It's
the only way to get the WPA dialogs in WinXP.

I tried turning on the SSID broadcast and I get a popup indicating the
availability of the network but no connection results from configuring the
notebook with WPA/TKIP and the proper key.

tnx

Very similar problem here. Linksys WAP54G set up as access point and
WPA preshared key. IBM Thinkpad with Intel 2100 card. I've tried using
both Windows XP as well as the IBM Access Connections Client -
everything updated to latest drivers. Static WEP keys work, WPA
Preshared keys do not. Slightly different symptoms - I can associate
with the Linksys, I get a nice signal, but can't access anything on
the LAN or Internet. Thought it might be the DHCP issue, but I set up
the laptop with a static ip (out of the DHCP range) and I still cannot
access the network. When I change laptop and AP back to WEP,
everything works.

linksys is reportedly working on compatibility with intel and should be
providing updated firmware "shortly".

i'll post as soon as i see it.

Linksys just updated their firmware for the WRT54G. Updated the firmware and
selected WPA-PSK w/ TKIP on both router and notebook and everything worked
just fine...at least for now.
