WPA problem in XP - can't disable 802.1x authentication

I have a Linksys Wireless-G network card and a wireless
broadband router. Both have been updated (i.e. newest
driver and firmware). They both support WPA encryption.

I have also installed the Microsoft 815845 update to
allow for WPA encryption.

I have no difficulty establishing an unencrypted
connection. I also have no difficulty using WEP
encryption. However, when I try to use WPA security, I
simply cannot get a connection to come up.

One strange thing that I have noticed: When I use the
Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) tool, I cannot disable
the "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication" check box in the
Authentication Tab. This only happens when I select up
WPA-PSK (or WPA) authentication in the Association tab.
If I set things back to WEP or no encryption, I am able
to disable the 802.1x authentication.

It would seem to me that this 802.1x issue is the likely
cause of my lack of connection, as I have no 802.1x
authentication set up on my network. I thought, however,
that WPA-PSK was supposed to work in a non-802.1x
environment. Is this simply a bug in the updated WZC?

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Regards,

Peter

Peter

I had the same problem, at least by your symptoms, when I first installed
the WPA capability. It turned out that I had, sometime in the past, set the
Authentication Type to "Shared Key" on the Advanced Tab of the Router
configuration. Setting it to Auto, cleared the problem.

Just for reference: I am using the WRT54G router and the WPC54G Notebook
Adapter. I also have the WZC setup for WPA-PSK and AES. The Enable IEEE
802.1x authentication box is checked, but grayed out.

Hope this may help

Bob

Thanks.

I had made the same change myself. I changed it then my computer crashed
upon bringing up the connection. There is a known issue between the Linksys
driver with WPA and the cardbus controller in my notebook. At least I'm now
in territory that others are experiencing.

Peter
