I have XP Pro on a Gateway laptop. I installed the Microsoft -485 WPA
patch and the -942 wireless rollup patch, but I the Zero Config box
still shows only WEP as an encryption option and "open" or "shared"
for authentication options. In other words, it's not reflecting the
presence of the patches and not displaying any WPA options.

The wireless card is an Intel PRO 2100 B card. When I tried using
Intel's Proset, which does support WPA, I was treated to the Blue
Screen of Death, a first in all the time I've used XP.

I tried removing ALL the hotfixes and then reinstalling them through
Windows Update, but nothing changed. Has this happened to anyone else?
Is there something I'm overlooking?

Any illumination would be appreciated.

I have experienced the exact same thing. The Patch didn't even appear
in the ADD/REMOVE programs section in the Control Panel. What really
freaked me out was when I was attempting to see how my old Netgear
MA521 card performs with my Belkin wireless G router. Since I didn't
want to install the wireless config utility that came with the card, I
opted to enable the windows xp WZC utility. WPA and WPA-PSK appear in
the drop down box. I freaked out. I became curious and removed the
MA521 card and reinserted my Netgear WG511T card. Both WPA and
WPA-PSK appeared in the drop down box of the windows xp WZC. Is the
patch installed but remain hidden? It is still not listed in the
ADD/REMOVE programs section. When I attempted to type in the WPA-PSK
network key that matches that of the router, I could not connect.
After several attempts and failures, I went back to using the Netgear
wireless utility that came with the WG511T card.

Are you running the latest driver for the Intel card? For WPA to work you
have to have a WPA enabled AP/router, OS supplicant, and driver/firmware for
the client card.

When I tryed out the Microsoft Windows XP patch for WPA wireless
security, I was wondering, because the dialog for wireless network
changes it's layout but I still couldn't setup WPA or WPA-PSK. After
some research I had a thought that this may be caused by an old
wireless network driver of my WLAN card. I use a laptop with an
built-in Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter. When I
got the driver update from the IBM website...

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview...&cc=us&lang=en

....I succeeded. Since the update the wireless lan dialog shows me an
option for WPA and WPA-PSK. Now I'm very happy and WPA works fine.

Just for those who had the same problem.
