Would windows reprint a single page ?

Hello All,

We use an application named Bartenter to generate labels. A typcial
document we send to our printer contains 2500 pages.

We recently had a problem where one label was printed twice. I.E., a
duplicate document was generated.

I know this is a vague question, I am really only trying to get your 'feel'
for this fault.

Do you think that Windows would have generated the reprinted page?

I do not think Windows would cause this, the page did print twice, but I
think that fault lies with either the application generating the print or
the printer, that is producing the pages.

I am interested in your feedback.

I have purposely now attempted to outline the OS versions involved because
there is a few machines it the chain, but to give you an idea,

The WorkStation is XP Pro
The Printer is queued on a Win2000 Server machine.
We are using the recommended SeaGull Scientific Printer Drives
We are printing over TCP/IP.

Finally, the fault is intermittant, we have only witnessed it twice, once in
August 2005 and once in Dec 2005.

We have probably printed 1 - 2 million labels in that time !

Hi Mark,

I would suspect it to be in the application, or the print job itself. The
printer just does what it's told, though if there is a "glitch" some may
lose the current page count and restart from the last completed page. If
you've only had two repeats in a million, I would think it more as a
curiousity than anything else.

Thanks for the response,

I certainly acknowledge that it could be in the application. When you say
"or the print job itself", what exactly do you mean.

Are you referring to the print job in the Printer Queue? or referring to
something in the printer.

Unfortunately, it is two repeats in 6 million labels, but as opposed to
being a curiousity, the customer is not happy with even this qty of
duplicate!

As you can imagine, it is not easy to diagnose.

Any further thoughts are welcome.

Having been in the computer industry since before there was
an IBM PC, I have seen a LOT of "gremlins".

I've had "issues" arise,

and when a engineer or tech or programmer walked into my
office (I'm a writer/computer documentation person)

and I explained the situation-- (and why my project was
running late or "off track") had the "pro" tell me,
"bullshit! That just doesn't happen! If you can't do the
job, just say so!"

I'd be trying to dig myself out, the "pro" would decide to
"give me a teensy break" and do that phase himself, and 10
minutes later, I'd hear a "I'll be **&&)987)&)&^7! The
*)(&)*(7 computer just did it to me!"

In a dozen different applications from DOD to NASA, from
computer design ("pre-Microsoft"), to CAD/CAM, my cohorts in
the biz have come to call these "glitches" either "burps" or
"farts", depending on your mood.

Frankly, Mike, if your computer / printer has only burped 2
times in 5 months or so, I'd be kissing it "Good morning"
every day and looking for a girlfriend/boyfriend for it (for
those long, lonely nights!!

For 2 burps in 5 months, you are Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
ahead of the game!

Just to give you a tiny clue, I now use XP Pro (the one we
old-timers call "Microsoft FINALLY got it right")

on an AMD 1.8 Ghz with a 200 Gb hdd, 512 mb, an 80 Gb
external hdd, a 250 mb external Zip, and so on.

As advanced as XP Pro is,

I STILL have to reboot (reset button) some 10 or 20 times a
D A Y !!

I lock up that often!


I was in a computer store a couple of years ago. XP had been
out about a year. I got to chatting with another "pro" (a
programmer, as I recall) about hardware/software, what we
use, what we prefer, what we hate...

She finally said, "You sound kinda knowledgable. Can I ask
you something?"

I was flattered. I told her, "I hope I'm kinda
knowledgeable. I helped give birth to the IBM PC,
LITERALLY."

She asked me if my XP PRO ever locked up on me.

I LAUGHED. "Only about 10 - 20 times a DAY!" I chuckled.

She said, "I thought XP was supposed to be "the perfect OS!"

I laughed. "Ain't no such animal!"

She said, "Mine locks up about 10 -15 times a day. I thought
it was me!"

I said, "Honey, I haven't talked with a single person yet
who doesn't have to warm boot at LEAST 10 times a day."

I have asked my tech about this. He's an engineer who is
capable of designing systems at the logic level. He asked me
what I was doing. We got to talking. I said I typically have
at LEAST a dozen windows open at one time.

Bruce said I shouldn't have more than 3 to 5 windows open at
one time. "That's why you're locking up."

I simply can't live with 5 windows open. I TYPICALLY have 10
windows open. So I guess I'm stuck with warm booting 10
times a day.

And we're back to the beginning.

No, windows will not reprint a single page. It has no way to determine that
any page needs to be reprinted.
The program Bartender prepares a spool file for the printer driver. The
printer driver opens this spool file and sends pages to the printer as
needed. The printer prints what it receives from the driver. The only
thing that could determine that a page needs to be reprinted is the printer,
but printers only print.

Hello, A wild guess, an electric anomaly, a millisecond surge not enough
to cause a shut down or a ups unit to kick in, just enough to cause a
printing stutter.

A friend recently returned from a 3 month teaching assignment in your fair
country.
She is considering returning, on a more permanent basis. Her passion
"horses" seems she found many kinder spirits in Ireland.

I was referring to the print queue, the printer normally just does whatever
jobs are sent to it.
