I am having an issue with some of my pcs freezeing during logon. I have two
2003 servers in a 2003 domain with all workstations running xp. All machines
have up to date patches. The issue happen to newer machines that I have
setup since the beginning of the year, machines that are a couple of years
old work correctly. During logon the computers will freeze, usually
immediately after the password is entered. It doesn't matter what username
is used. The machine then has to be reset with the power switch. After
several attempts the workstation will logon. I have check the event logs on
the workstation and have notice, when it logs on there is an entry for
w32time stating that it is syncing with the time server. When the
workstations freeze this entry isn't there. On the servers windows time
service appears to be operating correctly. Any thoughts?

Hi,

Did you ever try to leave the machine up for few hours or over night in
"frozen" state? If not -- try to do that.

Can you ping the computer in "frozen" state from another PC?

How is DNS set up on these computers (what DNS is entered under TCP/IP
properties)...

What happens if you unplug the network connection and log on with
cached credentials? Does the machine still stop responding?

If it doesn't freeze then looks like something with network, dns etc.

Also if RRAS service is running, try next wime with it disabled to see
if any difference...\

I turned off RRAS - no change.
Cached Credentials seems to work about 50/50.
When workstation is froze I can Ping by name and IP
DNS is by DHCP. The two DNS servers are the two Domain Controllers.
I have left the workstation on for over an hour with no change, I will try
for longer.
