I have an XP Home laptop operating behind a Vigor 2600 router, my
daughter has an XP Home laptop operating behind a LinkSys WiFi router.

Recently she connected to my network via VPN (Vigor has its own
server).

My router showed she had been assigned an address within my network.

Ping worked OK and we initaited a VNC connection which worked fine but
when we each viewed the Workgroup Computers via My Computer I could
see my own and my daughter's computer but she could only see her own.

Lack of time prevented us explorer too many options at the time but
anyone shed any light as to why, using Workgroup Computers, I could
see her but she couldn't see me even though she connected to me via
VNC using my laptop's specific IP address within the network.

You need to have at least one folder shared on your PC for it to show up in
the network. Sometimes it takes a while (15 mins or so) for the network
browser to display everything on the LAN when using workgroups - this may be
even longer if you're connecting over a WAN. Nevertheless, check you are
sharing at least one folder and see what happens.

could she access yours with the \\compname convention ?

might be a firewall issue blocking the browsing feature.

Didn't actually try that but did try the 'Find computer on network'
facility; not sure if it uses the same method but will try the
\\computername method next time.

Someone else mentioned the software firewall, I'll try a few
alterations there.

Thanks.

But VNC is completely separate from Mickeysoft traffic - I know you mean
'so I know the PC is reachable' but the same would probably be true if you
'ping' it - just means it will answer some types of traffic, no guarantees
of anything else... and FWIW, has been a while since I relied on sharing,
I tend to install free FTP server (WarFP etc) which then allows control to
the user settng it up to give individuals different access, start at other
parts of their directory tree, log the requests, and be usable with router
port forwarding from the internet in general, if you wish (with a firewall
one could control access to a limited set of fixed IP addresses for better
security against hacker attempts). Peter M.

FTP is an option, I've used it before but didn't think of it in
relation to this.

Reason I've used VNC is that it is as though you are sitting in front
of the remote computer so can have complete control; handy if trying
to sort out a problem.

Agreed, I've used VNC for a while (a few years) to assist people, and
have not used VPNs - for a start there might be something nasty which
will attempt to jump into your PC if you 'drop your guard' against an
IP address on your "local" LAN, which is likely to be one option in a
firall application... I've also recently tried www.LogMeIn.com which
offers (in its paid-up form) a number of levels of support, primarily
giving desktop control (like VNC) but also offering file transfers,
(like "ssh", etc, etc). While VNC isn't encrypted, LetMeIn is, and
it drops back after the trial period (30 days, or 2 hours connected)
from handling the file transfers to just desktop control.

The other day I was quickly controlling the PC of someone in London,
who has barely mastered a broswer, let alone being able to alter any
settings in the office router... LetMeIn allowed access within 10 min
(including me changing the port to be outside the range (2001-2005)
where it was wrongly being reported as a trojan by Norton Security).

Similar setting up as for VNC, has security, needs no port forwarding,
but is not cross-platforn at this time. Peter M.
