Will this work, is this what I want to do?

Ok, just getting into this networking idea.
I want to create a home network (5 computers).

[Downstairs]

Modem(DSL Sympatico)
|
4 Port Router(#1)/Print Server
| | |
| | Printer/Scanner
| |
Main System Server(?) (w/ 2 NIC's)
P4 2.4Ghz P-166 Computer (Firewall,
| Parental Control,
[Downstairs] | Primary AV)
|
30' cable to upstairs |
|
[Upstairs] |
|
4 Port Router(#2)
/ | \
/ | \
/ | \
/ | \
Child 1 Computer Laptop Child 2 Computer
P2-400Mhz P2-266Mhz P2-400 Mhz

[Upstairs]

The idea here is that the Main system will have complete access to the
internet and the printer/scanner. While the two children's computers
will be behind an inbound & outbound firewall with parental controls
(Site blocking). The Laptop will be limited by the safety controls as
well, but that is ok. All three computers upstairs will have access to
the printer/scanner too.

Questions:

Will this setup do what I am expecting it to?

Will Router #2 act simply as a hub or switch?

Will the Server(?) actually control all outbound internet calls?

Am I completely out in left field with what I think I know?

Thanks all,

Just like to say thanks for all the responses, is there a reason my
posting was ignored? Was this the wrong ng? Did I ask it incorrectly?

I think the nice drawing may have scared people :>

looks like the setup should work BUT I can't answer the question about the
firewall/parental control ...not familiar with your software.

the only problem that might get a bit hairy is the server between the two
routers...

post back after you set it up:> (don't forget the neat drawing:>)

haha, thanks Haggis. I had thought the picture would help explain the
setup better than words.

The security software will be Agnitum's firewall with keyword blocking
on web pages (ie, MP3, XXX, etc).

I plan on using Win98SE on all machines. I am assuming I will have to
use Internet Connection Sharing on the server machine.

Thanks again,

I was going to mention that ...sounds like you are on the right trail.

I think you might have to turn of dhcp on the second router...it will need
to be just a hub for ICS...

post your progress :>

Did you notice that some of the ASCII got a little out of whack?

Keeping in mind that spam/porn vendors manage to latch onto just
about any keyword you can think of. It's amazing what shows up doing
a search for the most innocent stuff.

Is the server solely for the purpose of firewall/parental control?
Or will it have files that the other machines need access to.
The reason I ask, is that upgrading to a router with those
capabilities may be an easier/cheaper way to go.
Even using an existing 'free' p166 might be more expensive in
setup/configuration time an hassle.

Right, I hadn't thought of that, thanks.

No, it came out fine on my newsreader. Sorry if it was scambled, I
tried to keep it compact.

I know, but you do the best you can, know-what-I-mean? You block the
ones you can think of and hope you get the worst of it all.

Well initially it will act as the firewall/P.C., but I hope to expand
its duties to perhaps a file server, backup, web server, whatever else
I thrust upon the poor devil.

And I can't think of a router that has an outgoing firewall, they
mostly just have inbound firewalls don't they?

Nice to have a computer to use as a handy backup. Quick and easy.

I'm not that familiar with 'em. Probably not. Other then Cisco stuff.
