ok i still cant get a connection of the xp machine so i was wondering if
this would work,,,

the modem is connected to the win 98 machine by a usb,,but also on the modem
is the ethernet slot,so can i just plug the xp machine into this???

Probably not. Most cable/DSL modems support using either USB or Ethernet
but not both at once.

I don't really understand your post - the words seem to be all
jumbled up. However, if you're asking if you can use the USB
port of an ADSL modem at the same time as its LAN port
then the answer is "yes" with many modems, e.g. with Billion
or some Netcomm modems.
