I don't understand why you feel you need two boxes....!? You can get 'all in
one' Wireless Access Point/4 port Wired Router/ADSL Modem. Belkin (7630) do
one of these now too - there *are* others out there. A mate of mine has just
bought the Netgear DG834G which works well and he had no problem installing
it. He connects the unit to his phone line for ADSL and via one of the four
ethernet sockets to his desktop PC. His daughters laptop then connects
wirelessly via a PCMCIA wireless lan card to the netgear unit. They can then
surf the 'net net without problem and transfer files between PC's etc.
If you leave the Netgear unit on it makes no difference if the desktop is on
or not, the Netgear dials up the ADSL connection on demand for you. I
suggest you do some research on the various websites and download the
various manuals in Acrobat so you know what you are buying before you make
your decision. (I have a Netgear wirelss Router WGR614 which connects via
ethernet to my broadband cable modem and connects to the PC downstairs
wirelessly - it all works well).
If you're trying to save money
www.ebuyer.co.uk sell some none branded
equipment very cheaply that does the job quite well. Don't forget 802.11b is
fast enough for surfing, you only need the faster standard for file transfer
or faster tasks.....
I wouldn't proclaim to be an expert but what I have bought all works and
works well, I hope that helps.
