Hi,

I've got an SMC2802W v2 which I 'ld like to configure. I am using kernel
2.6.6 and wireless-tools.27.pre22.

ifconfig -a shows my wlan card as eth1, but iwconfig prints out:

eth1 NOT READY ESSID "SMC" .....

I tried to bring this interface up using "ifconfig eth1 up". But I just got
the error: "SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory"

My Question to you is: how can I make this card running?

thx Robert

You'll have to install the proper dirver/firmware.
Have a look at http://prism54.org/~mcgrof/firmware/.

Andreas

thanks a lot. I could find my failures using:
http://prism54.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/prism54-ng/README .
To bring my card up I had to
* compile module instead of build them into the kernel
* cp und rename the firmwarefile into the right directory

now I have got a further problem:
As far as I read, all I have to type is 'iwconfig eth1 essid SMC; iwconfig
eth1 mode Managed' and then ' ifconfig eth1 up'.
but using dhcp (dhcpcd -n eth1) I can't get any ip from my DHCP-Server.

(even iwlist eth1 scanning fails: no scanning result)

What am I doing wrong?

I'm myself a newbie but,...
Does your AP use encryption? WEP?
If so supply the key to iwconfig

I deactivated any encryption at the moment.

the failure seems to be deeper:

*** dmesg says:
[...]
eth1: islpci_close()
eth1: islpci_open()
eth1: resetting device
eth1: uploading firmware
eth1: firmware uploaded done, now triggering reset...
eth1: device soft reset timed out
[...]

*** lspci says:
[...]
0000:00:0c.0 Network controller: Harris Semiconductor D-Links DWL-g650 A1
(rev 01)
Subsystem: Accton Technology Corporation: Unknown device ee03
Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV+ VGASnoop- ParErr-
Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort-
<TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <
[...]

But this information is definitiv wrong, because I am using a SMC 2802W
pci-card.

Thanks for this information, I have been fighting with wireless in linux
for over 2 months. I have the exact smc card, and tonight because of this
information I am writing this thank you via wireless. Now if I can figure
out how to get it to use 54mb,instead of 11, but I can live with it.

May GOD bless you
