Wiring question

I am attempting to put a phone (RJ-11) and a data jack (RJ-45) into
the same wall outlet.

The wiring will also have to share the hole within the wall with
speaker wires (for 4 surround speakers) as well.

Because the hole in the joist appears to be pretty small, I need to
minimize the cabling that goes through the whole.

Q) Is there cable with 10 wires (2 for the phone line and 8 for the
data line)? Is there a danger in combining both into a single line?

My plan is to split the cable with dual splice - 2 wires for the voice
that go to the phone box and 8 wires that will go to the
switch/hub/router/whatever. Is this being clever or am I asking for
trouble?

I hop that I can also get two 4-wire speaker cable through the same
whole, as that is the primary point of doing this whole thing...

A five-pair network/POTS cable seems like solving the least of your problems,
unless you're going really cheap on those audio cables.

So make a bigger hole in the joist!

Invest in a drill extension rod for about five bucks and a 5/8 or 3/4" spade
bit for a couple of bucks and go nuts. Make sure the drill is grounded in case
you whack a main line (btdt, shit happens ;-) Don't trash the wall surface
outside of what gets covered by the wall plate and you'll be way ahead of
random "professionals".

I haven't seen any drill extension long enough. I have to reach the
joist from the plug...about 7 feet.

They do make extensions that long, but you probably can't justify the cost
on such a small project. Check your local rent-all place.

I thought I responded to this, but the solution is cheap: more drill
extensions. The ones I use are 24" long, I've often used both together. A
couple of more would do the job - and they only cost a couple of bucks each...

Use a WireMold box and surface raceway. You'll be done in 5 minutes.

Uh huh. And he'll be hearing about it for the rest of his life...

WireMold, (the metallic kind) is also an effective faraday cage and will eliminate a lot of noise from any adjacent Romex cable in
the bay. It may be less esthetic, but its effective and fast for someone lacking a lot of fishing experience. If its a new place
or modular with that sprayed on foam insulation, fishing through that is near impossible.
