Hi,

My intention is to have one computer connected to the Internet all the
time via USB ADSL Modem. If I put a wireless card in there, a
wireless card in my laptop and another wireless card in a 3rd computer
- will Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing in windows xp let me
share the internet connection on computer 1 to the other two
computers? I have searched the Internet for help on this and it seems
possible to share the internet on one computer with another computer
(ad hoc, peer to peer) but is it possible to do this with 3 computers?

Any response is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

JJ

I believe that if you talk wireless NIC to wireless NIC you essentially
have a point to point connection, so only one machine will be supoorted.

Either get a wireless ADSL modem/router to replace your usb modem
(negates the need for ICS), or connect an Access Point to the gateway PC.

To the best of my knowledge it can only work between two computers, it
is called Ad Hoc mode and simulates a 'Cross Over' wired connection.

If you are looking at three you will need an Access Point, also I
would strongly recommend an ethernet modem connection rather than USB
as I believe this works better with networks.

I'll second that, especially the ethernet modem as opposed to the usb.
It is a lot easier to set up and also doesn't need the computer with
the modem on all the time.

Just to follow up this thread I started:-

I really did want a computer and modem on all the time, which would
share the internet access to the other two computers. I bought two
wireless pci cards for the 'server', one for the other desktop and a
pcmcia card for the laptop. All works great with Microsoft Internet
Connection sharing, through Windows XP. So I guess the point is that
with ICS you can share the internet between more than two computers
when using a peer-to-peer wireless network.

Cheers.

To the best of my knowledge you can't do what you want to do. You
would need an access point, I would go for an ethernet modem on the
back of the AP.
