Another day of banging my head....

Had an old computer in the family room
I was working on for some Scouts.
Wanted to try it out on the home network,
but didn't want to drag it upstairs
to where the Ethernet was located.
Thought I would try using my wireless laptop to our Access Point
and connect via the laptop Ethernet NIC
and use the Win XP Network Bridge between wireless & Ethernet.

Well - couldn't get it to work - mostly on the wireless side.
To begin - each connection works fine by itself -
local Ethernet - works & can ping router
local Wireless - works & can ping router
ok -
Setup the Win XP Network Bridge on the laptop -
local Ethernet enabled & bridged
local Wireless enabled & bridged
Network Bridge - configured & enabled
The bridge takes over the TCP/IP config from each of the 2 networks.
so you have to set either DHCP or static - I used static -

Ok - try pinging my local router - nothing -
lots of other head scratching and trying things - nothing

dragged laptop upstairs and plugged the Ethernet into the Network
still using the Win XP bridge
also - plugged in my protocol analyzer to the Network
tried pinging from the laptop - yup - comes out the Ethernet connection just
fine
unplug the laptop from the Ethernet - still leaving the Win XP bridge
tried pinging from the laptop - nothing !!!!!!!!
ok - disable & un-connect the bridge from the Wireless
try pinging - works just fine -
re-build the bridge - nothing !!!!
I give up -
Anyone get a wireless connection & bridge working ????
or any ideas ??????

The Network Wizard and the Bridge are pure trouble. One should advoid
them and use the classic approach of doing it manually, unless one is
conecting to non NT based O/S(s)you use the NW, but still advoid Bridge
(delete it if it shows up). You may also diable the Wireless Zero
Configuration another source of trhouble.

Unfortunately, I've had no luck with an Orinoco Gold and DLink USB NIC. You
may want to try upgrading the firmware of your NIC. Other than that, I
don't think you're doing anything wrong--it just doesn't work in all
situations.

I had read somewhere a typical rule for a bridge is that it may not
produce it's own packets. I dont know if microsoft got it right and made
it so the laptop's stack cant interact with the networks it is bridging or
not. I havent tested it on my laptop/networks.
