Wireless USB Network adapter installation

I have a Linksys wireless USB network adapter and I am
trying to install it on a Windows 98 computer. It has
worked on it in the past but we had to reinstall the OS
and get the computer back to its original state due to
some other problems. So now I need to install the network
adapter again to communicate with the router.
I follow the steps per the instructions using the install
CD and then plugging in the adapter. When I plug it in I
get the "New Hardware" discovered and I put in my Windows
98 CD as instructed but then it hangs. Next time I try
restarting and plugging the device in it's got it set not
to detect it anymore and I change that setting and try it
and it still hangs.
Anybody able to help me? I've already installed the
driver I used last time I installed this thing but I
can't get past this.
