I have a wireless router that came with my DSL line. I was looking at the
specs of this router and it connects at 54mbits. Is that symmetrical? Or
will I get something like a 500kbit upstream from my pc to the router?

Actual speeds are influenced by many factors. Some are distance between
client and router, walls, RF Interfearance and things like that.

Ok, pretend that we are talking about the best conditions here. What could I
be looking at for upstream speed? Will it be the same as my download speed?

In doing file transfers between networked computers yes they will be just
about the same, but Internet upload and download speeds will be determined
by your ISP.
