wireless tool extension problem

I am running fedora on a dell inspiron 5100 and have installed kernel
2.6 on this. I am trying to compile version 26 of the wireless tools for
this machine because when I issue the command iwconfig I get, among
other things, the statement that the driver for device wlan0 has been
compiled with version 16 of Wireless Extention while this program (I
assume iwconfig) us using 15. I have compiled iwconfig, the driver for
my wireless card (I need to use ndiswrapper because my card isn't
supported under linux) and the kernel using the same compiler on the
same system, although it may be worth noting that I was running a
2.4.something kernel when I compiled the 2.6 kernel and ndiswrapper,
while I am compiling the wireless tools using the 2.6 kernel.

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?
