If it were me, I would go the route of using a dialup NAT router as the
gateway for the LAN and WAN, because of the protection the router provides
for attack from the Internet for the LAN.

Then you might want to get a *wireless access point* and plug it into the
router so that the wireless machines can access the Internet and share
resources on the LAN. I would also connect the wired machine to the router,
to configure the WAP.

Then I would implement IPsec on all the XP machines to secure the LAN and
configure IPsec to not allow access to and from the Internet for the wired
machine.
