I'm looking for a tablet pc that will allow me to run a remote desktop of my
main PC via a wireless link. I'd plan to use it for surfing while in another
room from the main pc - maybe play MP3 file also. So in theory, i don't need a
very high spec processor running on the tablet PC.

Does anyone know of a cheap solution ? (UK).

tia

Probably just as cheap to get a second hand laptop off Ebay given tablet
PC prices.

Agreed, right now I'm using a 233 MMX Compaq that I paid $100 U.S. for and a
noname wireless card for $28. Works fine for surfing and email.

I believe all tablet PC's are capable of running XP's remote desktop. You
also may want to look into Windows Smart Display techology.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sma...ay/default.asp A number of
manufacture's are making Smart Displays.

Well...It is an extremely expensive option for the intended purpose. The
second-generation tablets are few and expensive (not too mention that IMO most
are/look too fragile to me..)

You can get a discontinued first generation tablet (say, a ViewSonic 1000) and just
connect it to your network via built-in 802.11b or Ethernet. These "first generation
tablets" are pretty much self-contained computers with touch screens and
detachable/wireless keyboards, perfectly usable for your purpose. These are
available either used (for instance coming off leases) or "new old stock" for much
less than new tablets. Look around, you might luck out.

remote control is not only about browsing... I regularly remote the control
of IEE-488 instrumentation.

I realise that but I will say it yet again, the only inexpensive general
purpose computing platform that meets the requirements will be either a
cheap laptop or maybe at a push a PDA or similar.

A tablet PC (of the PC architecture) isn't an option at this point if
CHEAP is a keyword.

David.
