Alright, here is the deal. a week ago I got a MN-700
base station with the intention of sharing a broadband
connection with my pc (to be connected via ethernet) and
a laptop (to be connected through a dell TruMobile 1300
WLAN Mini-PCI Card). I set up the base station with the
pc via ethernet and finaly got it to work properly. Now
I am trying to add the notebook and connect it
wirelessly. However it is not working. It seems like it
should be working though. I go to Network Connections
and it says under Internet Gateway that my Internet
connection is connected and enabled. Also, under Lan or
High-Speed Internet is says my wireless Network
Connection is Enabled and is connected. When I go to
Wirless Network Connection Properties and go to the
Wireless Networks, the network I created shows up under
available networks. I click on configure to connect to
it. Then for wireless network key I have Network
Authentication set to open (don't know what this means)
and Data Encryption set as disabled (I turned off the
wirless security on the base station). Then I get
notifications that my wireless network is connected and
that I'm connected to the internet. However when I go to
open IE, i don't connect to the internet.
Also, in my system tray, if I hover my mouse over
the icon for the workgroup I created, it says I'm not
connected to the internet and if I double click on it and
open the Microsoft Broadband Network Utility, the screen
shows that I'm not connected to the workgroup and I'm not
connected to the internet.
What do I do? I'm new at this so are there any good
sites with good graphical instructions on how to get this
thing to work? Any advice, things to try, things to look
for would be great? What is the best way to add a
computer to a network? Thanks for taking the time,
MWH

If you divide the problem into three it becomes easier. You
need to configure (1) a connection between the router and
the Internet, (2) a wireless connection between the laptop
and the router, and (3) enabling workgroup connection
between the two computers.

Probably you have already most of the settings working. The
first thing you want to do is to disable software firewalls
and ICF on both computers -- this blocks both computers
from communicating, and you have a firewall on the router
anyway.

(1) Use the wired PC and check if you can go online. If not
check that the TCP/IP settings on the PC are set to obtain
an IP and DNS from the "server" (the server is actually
the router). If still does not work, concentrate on the WAN
screen of the router -- you need to use the settings from
your ISP to enable the connection; if nothing works, you
*may* (but most often you don't need) to clone the MAC
address of the PC that you signed with your ISP.

(2) Once the wired connection works, take care of the
wireless connection. Run IE and see if you can go to
192.168.2.1 (the router). If you can, then you are done.
Otherwise, check the TCP/IP settings on the laptop. Most
often you want to set to obtain an IP from the server, or
if it does not work well use IP 192.168.2.2, mask
255.255.255.0, DNS and gateway 192.168.2.1. Keep IEEE
802.1x unchecked. The only settings that matter on the
router at this point are the WIreless and Security/Wireless
screens -- if you keep WEP disabled it is easier (and
enable it once everything else is working). Router and wifi
card must use the same SSID, channel, WEP key, key length,
and key type. Once you are done with this you should be
able to (a) go to 192.168.2.1 from the laptop and (b)
browse the Internet from the laptop.

(3) The final point is to enable file and printer sharing
-- same workgroup name + enable sharing for the folders and
printers you want to share (right-mouse click on them and
select sharing). For printers, you also need to go to the
other computers and add the printer as a *network* (not
local) printer. Software firewalls must be disabled or
configured to let the LAN data through.

If you get new computers, don't reconfigure the router
again. Just configure their TCP/IP settings, wifi card,
workgroup name, and disable software firewalls and ICF.

I can connect to the internet and everything else with my
wired pc connection, just not with the laptop's wireless
connection. I guess my main question would be, if the
laptop says that it's connected to the network and tells
me I'm connected to the internet, why can't I open any
webpages and surf the net.

still can't connect with the laptop. Wired connection is
working great (what I'm using to post). I played around
with the laptop and set the ip to 192.168.2.2 and
chanaged the other settings accordingly and still, the
adapter reconized the network and I can connect to it,
but it's like IE won't use it to connect to the
internet. SO any other suggestions? Also, if the laptop
connects to a different wireless network already, could
that play a role in my problems.
THanks again,

hi,
As far ur wireless issue it shows connected however it's
not connected
so first step go to command prompt
type "ipconfig" and check the ip address it will show u
169.254.x.x

try to release and renew the ip address that is type
ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
u get any one of the error
the error should be "Request Timed out unable to contact
dhcp server" or

Winsock error
try this and let me know what is the exact error
all the best

hi,
first of all when I run ipconfig in command it shows my
ip Adress as - 192.168.2.86
SUbnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
and defalt gateway = 192.168.2.1

when i run ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew I get
NO ERROR message. Instead it shows my IP Adress and
everything else as the same as listed above. One thing
though is I get a message saying no operation can be
performed on Local Area COnnection while it has its media
disconnected. SO now what do I do?
Thanks For the input,
Matt

are you using the same "workgroup" on both computers?

That means that your wireless is working fine, and you have
another problem if you cannot browse the Internet.

Run IE and check Tools|Options. Under Connections you
should have LAN selected, not dialup. Also check on the
Advanced button that there is no proxy selected.

If this doesn't resolve, check that you didn't set up MAC
filtering or client filtering on the router...

thanks for the help. Just one more thing though, why
does the work group icon in the system tray display red
like I'm not connnected to the work group.

If that's on the wireless laptop, it's probably the
ethernet wired connection that you are not using. If you
don't plan in going wired, disable it and the icon will go
away.

Another thing that you may want to disable is the MBNU.
Just remove it from Start/Programs/startup group. It is not
needed to run the network.

Finally, now that the system is working make sure to enable
WEP on the router and wireless cards -- otherwise anyone
nearby can connect through your router. Use the same key,
key type, and key length on the router and the cards.
