Your network will only be as fast as the slowest, most unreliable link,
if the desktop is that slow, unreliable link then no, it won't be any
faster. If it's the desktop, then yes it could well be faster. You
should be able to find what speed you're wireless adapter is connected
to the router at, this will give you an idea of where your problem is.
Note that 54Mbps wireless is not going to give you 54mbps data
throughput, it's a measure of the total speed including any error
correction and link management data the connection needs, the same
follows for any lower connect speed as well.
