have a wireless router both pc and laptop access net at same time via the
router, the router has ethernet ports

would storage plugged into the routers ethernet ports be quicker than
sotrage on seperate wirelessly connected device?

in terms of accessing the storage from the PC or laptop which connect to the
router wirelessly

Wired networks are almost always faster than wireless.

yeah i know but this network wont entirely be wired

the hard drive will be wired to my router via ethernet (100Mbps)

I will then access this hard drive over my local network wirelessly (54Mbps)

My internet connection is also shared wirelessly from the same wireless
router that the hard drive will be wired to

when i have my LAPTOP and DESKTOP on wireless and i try to share files
between the two its pretty slow

would using the wired hard drive to my router allow for faster file sharng?
or would it still lag like sharing file over the laptop and desktop
wirelessly

remember the internet is also being used wirelessly on both machine, could
this have a bearing on how the sharing of files between laptop and desktop
is?

thanks again

Just passing, may have got the whole wrong end of the stick on this one.

But you can only go as fast as the slowest person (so to speak)
So if you have a part of your network at 54Mbps and part at 100Mbps, and
your wanting them to communicate (i.e wireless to wired) then they can only
communicate at 54Mbps.

I understand that BUT whilst i have just the DESKTOP and LAPTOP on the
network, transferring files between the two is quite slow and unstable

I was wondering if adding a wired storage would mean that i wouldnt need to
send information from the DESKTOP then through the router to the LAPTOP i
would simply just need to SEND it from the wired storage through the router
to the LAPTOP

if you get me?

Your network will only be as fast as the slowest, most unreliable link,
if the desktop is that slow, unreliable link then no, it won't be any
faster. If it's the desktop, then yes it could well be faster. You
should be able to find what speed you're wireless adapter is connected
to the router at, this will give you an idea of where your problem is.
Note that 54Mbps wireless is not going to give you 54mbps data
throughput, it's a measure of the total speed including any error
correction and link management data the connection needs, the same
follows for any lower connect speed as well.
