wireless slow transfer rate

My transfer rate is a miserable 60Kbps over 802.11b
network built with D-Link hardware: DI-614+ router, DWL-
650+ wireless adapter in laptop and DFE-530TX+ Ethernet
adapter in desktop.

D-link has demonstrated that their equipment is not at
fault. Ping times across this net are "extremely good".

Environmental hazzards are not a factor, router and
adapter are only six feet apart, clear view & no unusual
electrical interference sources.

How can I isolate the problem to one of the two computers
and then identify what is causing the probem?

I'm running W98SE with SP2 and all current microsoft
patches on both machines.

Thanks for any ideas.
