Wireless shenanigans

I've just switched from a cable modem to ADSL so bagged myself a nice
litte ADSL wireless router from work (a Netgear DG834G v2 - the small,
white version).
It is, however, crap. Even a few feet and pure line of sight away,
the signal is only 'Good' and disappear around a corner and you've
had it.
Thinking the router was at fault, I then liberated a version 1 of the
same router model. With both routers broadcasting, I checked signal
strength and the new (v1) router was 100%.
Good show, I thought. I've cracked it. So proceeded to hook up my
ADSL line into the v1 router and configure it. Hey presto! As soon as
it was transmitting an internet connection the signal dropped right
down just like it had done with the other one and, when I checked,
the non-internet broadcasting v2 router was up to 100% strength. It's
not a network card issue and the problem is identical on my computer
downstairs, the one upstairs, my laptop and my IPAQ... All routinely
drop out connections or are extremely weak. I never had this trouble
with my wifi cable router.
Could there be something interfering with the signal? I'm at a loss
to think what it might be.
Thanks for any help to this baffling problem. I have to rid the house
of an endless trail of patch leads before the missus really loses it ;
)

for some reason you have a problem, either 2 faulty routers or something
absorbing the signal.

I also have a 834G v2 (white one) and its wireless signal is well good-
better than the Belkin AP upstairs in my house which I also have.

Try tweaking the channel number used by the router. Be patient, it
may take several changes to find one that suits all of your
systems.

IME 11b is usually OK, only occasionally a little fussy. But 11g
can be so totally unpredictable and fickle, yet desirable, that it
just has to be female.
