Wireless setup on xbox v1

I've just got myself a xbox wireless adapter (mn-740) and can't get the
thing to work. If I plug it into my xbox the xbox light on the adapter
does not come on. The NIC on the xbox works as I can ftp to the xbox
when i plug a cable straight into the xbox.

I didnt get a CD with the adapter - do I need it? When the adapter and
and xbox are connected via network cable should the light come on
immediately?

I've tried a factory reset. Any ideas?

What network cable are you using to connect the MN-740 to the Xbox?

Is this an Xbox or an Xbox360?

Did you make sure the firmware was updated on the MN-740?

What are you trying to connect the MN-740 to?

What kind of wireless security are you using? (Remember the MN-740 only
supports WEP last time I checked)

Did you disable the broadcast of the SSID?

I'm out of questions for now. Once again the more you answer the better
we can help you.

Joker - thanks for the reply.

> What network cable are you using to connect the MN-740 to the Xbox?

I've tried a normal cat5 cable and a cross over cable. Both are working
100%. Tested on another computer and a switch.

> Is this an Xbox or an Xbox360?

Its a xbox - v1.6

> Did you make sure the firmware was updated on the MN-740?

Nope - haven't been able to. I've connected the MN740 to my switch and
ran the update software. It reports it cant find the device.

> What are you trying to connect the MN-740 to?

Just trying to connect the MN740 to the back of the xbox.

I haven't even had a chance to setup and of the wireless stuff. for the
moment I cant even get the xbox to see the adapter.

One thing I did notice. When I've plugged the adapter into the xbox and
powerup. The powerlight alternates between green and ambre for about 15
mins. The wireless light flashes. After that both go off and the xbox
light comes on. I can see the light on the back of the NIC on the xbox
as well which shows there is a network connection. But if I go to the
xbox network settings and select the wireless setting it says it cant
find my adapter.

Cheers
Greg

Connect the MN-740 directly to the computer that is going to do the
firmware update. To switch, hub, router, or anything else between them
other then a network cable. (I'm not sure if it matters if it is
crossover or not, but nothing other then the network cable can be there
or it will never be able to find the MN-740, IIRC that is in the readme
file for the firmware upgrade.) Then install the firmware upgrade to
the MN-740. (Make sure your firewall software allows this to happen.)

Thanks - I haven't tried that yet. I'll give it a bash tonight and let
you know what happens.

Joker - I fixed the problem. You wont believe it but it was a power
supply problem. I'm not quite sure what led me to it but the power
supply was giving out 5.6V.

I got another power supply. This ones gives out 6.2V and the xbox
adapter works perfectly now. Updated the firmware and all working 100%

Thanks for the help.

I'm glad you figured it out. That's the first power supply problem I've
heard of for the MN-740, but then I wasn't working for Microsoft when it
was released. Also I have been known to lurk from time to time, or even
ignore this newsgroup.

More problems....

If I setup the xbox adapter and my wireless access point to have no
security everything works fine - but this is a little too insecure for
liking. when I enable WEP (either 64 bit or 128 bit) the xbox adapter
refuses to see my access point.

On the xbox i've selected infrastructure, the host name is the same as
my ssid, and selected 64bit wep with the same security key as on my
WAP. still no luck. what am I doing wrong?

I've got a surecom 9410sx. both wap and xbox adapter are on the latest
firmware.

Ok - scratch the previous reply. I went back to basics. (After a strong
cup of coffee)

Reset both WAP and xbox adapters and resetup IPs and keys. Now working
with WEP!!!
