Just got a Linksys WRT54G, and have connected it to the LAN.
I'm currently using it as just a router, as I have another
box setup as the gateway, which is using dialup.
The WRT54G has a default IP of 192.168.1.1, which is fine
when I ping it from the notebook, and can also ping the
other machines on the network if I set them to use 192.168.1.x
values. I get problems however when I change the WRT54G to
IP 192.168.0.3 and other machines to 192.168.0.x values.
In this case I can't even ping the router IP of 192.168.0.3
from the notebook.
I could just set my network to use the 192.168.1.x IPs,
although I'd rather understand why there is a problem there.
The routing table in the WRT54G is by default
DEST NETMASK GATEWAY
192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 LAN & Wireless
When I changed it to use the 192.168.0.0 IPs, I changed it to:
192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 LAN & Wireless
But it didn't do any good.
But also, even if I do use the 192.168.1.x IPs, I'm still
left with a problem, I think. That is routing through the
gateway.
While I can see the other machines on the network using the
above IPs, I will surely also need a second routing entry
in the table to send packets through the gateway, i.e.
DEST NETMASK GATEWAY
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 LAN & Wireless
Problem is I can't enter those values into the routing table,
as it reports them as being invalid.
Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.
