Wireless routers: recommendations?

Hi folks,

Hope you can help me out here. I'm looking to convert my existing
wired setup to a wireless one.

I already have a 1-port ADSL modem, and I don't particularly want to
replace that. I also have a nice Netgear router, which I'd like to
keep as that lives with my Linux box under the stairs.

So: I'm thinking of purchasing a wireless router around the £50-60
mark, to replace the cabled links to the two bedrooms.

Any product recommendations around that price mark?

Ta muchly in advance,

Joff

Could you clarify for me please.
You wish to keep a 1 port modem? Will your Netgear router and Linux box
plug into this port?
Will your wireless Router/Access Point be expected to then plug into the
Netgear router?
You then require 2 wireless cards for the Equipment in the bedrooms ,is
that correct?

If not correct could you please give some idea of the network you envisage.

Okily dokily:

1 port ADSL modem. Into that plugs my 4-port Netgear router. I want to
plug a wireless thingy into that, as well as my Linux box (that doesn't
need a wireless connection since it lives under the stairs with the
rest of my ADSL stuff).

Does that make more sense?

Joff.

Yes ,although IMHO if you already have a wired nework and Cat 5 or
better cable was used I would stick with that(Data transfer is better
and much more secure). The only reason we went for a wireless network was
that the cost of installing cabling and skt's in 5 rooms was more
expensive than a wireless Router/Modem combo and 2 wireless cards (at
various times there are 4 computers in the house including a laptop
running Linux).
I will have another look for Wireless routers/AP's when I get home
tonight but you may consider having to replace your Netgear Router with
a wireless one with Ethernet Ports.

If you are keeping your existing router, you wont need a wireless router,
just a wireless access point. You will of course need wirless cards in the 2
computers, and its best to match the brand of card with that of AP

Having a chat to a colleague he recommends replacing your netgear router
with a Linksys WRT54G (costs about £50 on e-buyer).He says it supports
WPA encryption ,firmware updates including availability of 3rd party
firmware and since you have a Linux Box

I bought a Belkin equivalent and it was crap once the signal had to go
through more than 2 walls. Then bought the suggested Linksys one and it was
great - very happy with it.
