Friend of mine is going for a wireless router, and we are looking for
recommendation.

Looking on eBuyer and google is a little too much information
especially with some of those routers not supporting PPPoA

Any suggestions.

TIA

To be honest, providing you pick one of the latest routers froma recognised
brand, you wont have any problems. Personally I have a Linksys WAG54G, but
any comparable device from Netgear, Belkin, 3Com etc will be fine.

[PS PPPoA is the standard for the UK so all ADSL providers use this, and not
just plusnet]

Yes, I can recommend the Netgear DG834G or GT - very easy to set up,
includes emailing of log files hourly/daily/weekly, rock-solid (it only
times it's lost the ADSL connection is occasionally in the small hours of
the morning, possibly due to ISP (Plusnet) or BT maintenance, and when I've
disconnected it during thunderstorms. Apart from that it's been up for 1000+
hours.

The only slight cockup in the latest firmware is that the months in the Date
field of the emailed logs in one ahead - today's email has a Date of 8
October 2005! It's only the Date field - the events in the logs have the
correct date and either the correct time or one hour ahead depending on
daylight savings. But those are fairly trivial things.

Personally given the choice of any router to buy again if I needed to,
I'd get another DG834G (not the GT, too many reports of instability with
that). With the latest firmware on the DG834G, you're very unlikely to
experience problems that aren't being caused by the ISP or BT, and it
does get disconnected due to such problems, it'll reconnect on its own
without interrupting what you're doing. Very stable, low latency and
very good wireless range if a little lacking on wireless throughput at
longer ranges. ADSL2+ ready, but how stable it'll be with ADSL2+ in this
country is anyone's guess.

thanks to you and others on for the info :-)

My friend has dug out the following (cheap) offer:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=64619

I told him there is plenty of time and he does not need to buy right
away, or would he go well with this product?

Agreed, I use 3Com OfficeConnect-something or other - on PlusNet.
It's fine, except I cannot make it go online automatically on startup
or on demand. Anyone know how?
