It seems as if my wireless router cable speed changes a lot when we
are online gaming with the x-box.
I am using a two year old linksys wireless router sorry I can't
remember the number but it was the best when I bought it.
Is there anything short of plugging the cable in direct to keep the
signal up ?
Thanks

Depends on what the problem is. Check for weak signal and wireless
interference. Try different channels (1, 6, 11). See wikis below for
more info.
