Wireless router for cable modem?

A friend asked for recommendations for a wireless router to connect to his
cable (old Telewest/Blueyonder, now VM, I believe?) modem. Unfortunately I
can't offer any advice because I've always been on ADSL, not cable.

What do you venerable gurus here suggest?

TIA,

John

Using a cheap'n'cheerful Netgear WGR614 here with no problems.

It might not work on the 20mb service though.

Why would some routers work with 20Mb and others not work? Surely all the
router is doing is adding NAT functionality to an existing Ethernet signal
so traffic from several different private IPs appears to come from the same
public IP that NTL assign.

Cable routers often have options to pass login information to the modem if
it requires it. As far as I can tell, NTL doesn't use username and password
in the way that an ADSL modem usually does, so is it likely that a Netgear
WGR614 or similar model will just work without any configuration - having
first powered the cable modem off so it detects the router's MAC and will
talk to it instead of the MAC of the computer that that modem was previously
connected to directly.

Go and tell him to make an appearance on this newsgroup and he will get some
advice.
It is available to him.

Depends on the processing power of its CPU amongst other things.

.... and run perform some sort of traffic filtering (most routers have
a rudimentary firewall) and deal with DMZs and run the GUI and...

Similar position myself, *again*, looking at Netgear WGTB 111T from PC
World, yes I know, but it's a good deal as long as nothing goes wrong,
and a Philips SNB 6500, any comments welcome.

Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 and Buffalo WHR-HP-54 are both definitely capable of
20Mbps.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful replies, except of course Trev, whose
reply was not helpful in the slightest. I'll pass the info onto my friend
this afternoon.

John.

The home networking section on our website might help:

<http://www.virginmedia.com/digital/homenetworking/>

Otherwise, there's some excellent other stuff out there at sites such
as Practically Networked.
