Hi,

I have a desktop with a broadband internet connection, and as I have just
bought a laptop I'm looking for advice on what wireless router to buy.
Here's my setup:

* Desktop connects via USB Modem to internet (BTOpenWorld ADSL)
* Laptop is IBM ThinkPad T41 with Centrino & built-in 802.11b
* Laptop needs to connect approx 50-60 feet (17-20m) and a couple of thick
brick walls away from the desktop
* Will need to connect via VPN to remote server (do I need something special
for this?)
* 802.11g capability a bonus, but not *absolutely* necessary
* All this in London, England

Anyone got any wisdom to share on what to buy / what to look out for / what
to avoid?

TIA,

PP

look out for VPN support for your chosen flavour of router. They don't
all do it (nor do I, so I can't suggest one).

Peter,

I can't recommend highly enough the Netgear DG834. I have been using
its slightly older cousin the DG814 for over 2 years with no problems.
I does DHCP, NAT, Port Forwarding, Firewall etc. It sets up in seconds
and is silent, you can leave it on ALL the time.

I use it for 2 Linux computerse and my work laptop.

For wireless, the DG834 has a big brother DG834G which has all the
features plus a wireless access point in one box. Currently retailing
for £125 on www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk.

With regard to your VPN. The Netgear routers support IPSec Passthru -
which is required for most VPN setups. I use a VPN client to tunnel
from my work laptop at home into work and it is as quick and
responsive as being in the office. You will need a particular VPN
client on your Laptop which depends on your VPN provider.

A.

I've been using a NetGear 824m for over a year now. Includes a firewall,
router, ADSL modem, DHCP server and supports my AT&T VPN. You can use it out
of the box, but some customisation might be useful. I never switch it off or
disconnect from the ADSL line. It does 802.11b and has been replaced by the
802.11g DG834
++Mark.
