Wireless router behind ADSL Modem

Hi all,
Attempting to connect a Belkin Wireless Cable/DSL Gateway Router behind
a Speedstream 5660 ADSL modem. Difficult to accpmplish but thru some
magic got the router to see the net. However connections was REAL SLOW.
Maybe a DNS problem.
ADSL works fine with 4 PCs thru a hub. Router could see LAN connected
PCs. Never got far enough to test wireless connect.
Both devices have DHCP enabled.
Disabled DHCP in ADSL Modem.... then nothing worked. Had to manually
reset PC IP address to gain acces to Modem to re establish DHCP.

Before I go further what steps am I missing and is there a site/s that
offer a practical tutorial.
BTW, Belkin 24/7 support is useless... Could not answer DHCP question.
Solution is always reload this, reboot that, without making any setting
changes. ISP is only concerned with the modem.
