You will first need to connect the router to the ethernet port on your
PC. The router will then assign the PC an IP address of 192.168.0.2, and
the routers own IP will be pre-set to 192.168.0.1. To set the router up
you load internet explorer and enter
http://192.168.0.1 into the address
bar and you then use the web-style interface to configure the various
parameters.
FWIW when I had a netgear DG824M all I had to do was pop in my ADSL
username and password, the rest was already set up properly, including
the firewall etc.

No. You will need to use the ME machine with it's cable connection to
configure the wireless LAN settings on the router, but once that's done
and the XP machine is connecting OK over wireless you can manage the
router from there by again navigating to
http://192.168.0.1
