Wireless router advice please

I currently have BT HomeHub2 router for BT Broadband/BT Vision and PS3,
and I'm struggling a bit playing Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PS3 - I'm
getting lots of 'failed to connect to host' when trying to join a race
(maybe 5 fails to 1 connect sometimes).
PC is wireless to router, BT Vision box and PS3 are wired (cat5).
Network test on PS3 gives download speed of 6.5Mbs (ish)
I have port forwarded to PS3, and tried disabling router firewall,
disconnected PC from home network, all to no avail.
Before I approach BT, I would like to 'investigate' the option of using a
different router, maybe there is one that is specifically good for game
playing?
I would appreciate advice from those who are knowledgeable in this area
please

I wouldn't say that was necessarily a router problem.

Even more strong indication its not a router problem.

Well be careful asking here. Plenty of people will tell you they have a
problem they (think they) know how to solve, rather than the one you
actually have..

Thank you N/P,
If you are here frequently you have an advantage over me with regard to
'participants'
I do hope to be able to 'read between the lines' of responses.
I have read elsewhere that the HomeHub2 is less than ideal for gaming, and
rather than ask 'there' I chose to ask elsewhere (here) by way of
cross-referencing.
If you consider this not to be a router issue, do you have a theory about
the cause please?

I no less than the square root of fuck all about gaming, as it been
years since I used to get killed in dungeons every time the modem
dropped the line ;-)

I suspect that you are confusing a separate issue - latency - or if you
like game LAG, which might be a function of the router (though more
likely of the ISP) with pure inability to connect at all, which is
likely to be a different issue altogether.

If the link is reliable for ordinary browsing and so on, and its only
game servers that are at fault, that would to me imply something
particular about those servers, or the route that BT uses to get to them.

Do you know enough to try ping and traceroute tests?

If tehserversrespnd topings withshortdelays, then you have a decent
route to them. If they still fail to connect, they may be simply busy.

The pother possible is the old MTU thing, which still seems to be an
issue. Some routers out there on thee backbone wont handle large
packets, and split them up. and others fail to put them back together
correctly. That doesn't normally screw a basic connection, as thats a
small packet, but it can screw large transfers. Thinks might get very
kjerky on you.

Which is a point..if you get to the servers, is the play fast and
smooth, or slow and jerky?

N P,
Play is fast and smooth once I'm in a race.
A disappointing lack of response here, but, having read some answers to some
other questions, I've learned of other areas to look at.
I will solve the problem, just need to look in enough corners :-)
Thanks for your response.
