I asked this question a few days ago.

From a shortlist of:

- Linksys WAG-54G
- Netgear DG834G
- Dlink DSL-604
- 3Com 3P002815-1
- Belkin FSD7632UK4

(all costing about £65-£70 from Dabs)

the recommendation was to go for the Netgear and to steer clear of the
Linksys on account of its tendency of the router to lock up several time a
day.

There are two Netgear routers with very similar names:

- Netgear DG834G (54 Mbps) £69
- Netgear DG834GT (108 Mbps) £101

The latter comes with a PCI, PCMCIA or USB2 wireless card bundled in for the
£101 price. I *think* that's the one that I've finally decided to buy for
myself.

"DSL" (digital subscriber line) is a generic term that includes ADSL
(asynchronous DSL, where upload is always 256 Kbps and download can be 512,
1M, 2M etc depending on tariff) and SDSL (synchronous DSL, where upload and
download are both 512, 1M , 2M, depending on tariff). Not a stupid question:
picking your way through the abbreviation soup can be a problem. I'm not
sure whether all/any routers described as ADSL can also be used with an SDSL
line.

aDSL is a flavour of DSL

just make sure you get a combined modem/router and not some "broadband
router" or "dsl router" that requires an external modem.

Look for G.dmt and PPPoA in the specs of supported stuff.

Not with plusnet/F9 are you? They do the BT2100 for £75. It has had several
good reviews especially wrt simple setup. I use one but as it is my first
router I can but say, I plugged it in and it does it's job. It serves my PC,
set top box and laptop flawlessly and has an easy to use interface.

There may be other reasons it is not on the list, namely price. I nabbed my
from the BT shop for £60 during the xmas sale.

I *am* with Force9, actually. I must admit I didn't check the routers that
they offer because I assumed that they'd be low-spec. Evidently I was wrong.
I'll look to see if the 2100 has got a review in adslguide.org.uk or
anywhere else.
