ADSL 2+ is provided by a thompson speedtouch modem / router connected to
an 8 port switch.

I also have a discarded by someone else but apparently fully functional
Zoom X6 ADSL router series 1058 model 5590C.

I was wondering if I could use the Zoom device as a wireless access
point on my LAN.

As Peter says, it should just work, however what I'd do is power it up
on it's own, connect a laptop to it (or standalone PC), then go into
the web based control panel for it, turn off DHCP and give it a fixed
IP address inside the range offererd by the Speedtouch.

Then connect it to the speedtouch network and you have an access point.

In principle yes.

Connect one computer to the Zoom router AND NOTHING ELSE.

Power up ther Zoom router and the computer

Log in to the router's configuration page.

DISABLE THE DHCP SERVICE
**************************

Change the router's IP address for one on the same subnet as the Thompson
router, but outside its DHCP scope.

Set the computer's IP address for another on the same subnet as the Thompson
router.

Confirm that the computer will talk to the Zoom router.

Connect the Zoom router tot he Thompson network. Reconfigure the computer
for "auto" IP address.

Re-confirm that the computer will talk to the Zoom router.

Set up the wireless on the Zoom router as you require.
