Wireless range through walls

The ADSLguide review of the Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL Router has some
comparative data on range of the signal through walls (below). Does anyone
know how the Draytek Vigor 2600G (or similar) compares?

I want to connect through two breezeblock internal walls.

Is the historical view that the Draytek is superior still valid, or have
Netgear caught up?

Router | 1st Wall | 2nd Wall | 4th Wall |
Belkin F5D7630UK4A | 80% | 13% | 0% |
BT 1250 (2Wire) | 100% | 54% | 26% |
Linksys WAG-54G | 93% | 53% | 6% |
Linksys WRT54G | 93% | 26% | 0% |
Netgear DG834G | 100% | 60% | 26% |
U.S Robotics 9106 | 75% | 20% | 0% |

I tried a Netgear DG834G thru 2 walls. Both walls had doors that provided
almost line of site to the third room. The reception was so bad it was next
to uselesss.

Linksys WAG54G was even worse.

You must have an unusual house! My DG834 covers the whole of mine (and all
the garden) from an upstairs room. The Netgear (or at least the predecessor
824M model) got a really glowing writeup on asldguide.org about the range of
its wireless system!

My Draytek 2600, covers the whole house, top to bottom. The house each side,
Oh and the house after that too. Even 100 yard down the street I get a
usable 1Meg link in the car.

I loose it round the corner of the street, but regain the link again when I
carry on round and come round the back. Most be a good 100 yards away.

Stick an external omni antenna on, and wow the link works 2km away in the
office, with a roof top grid antenna, with clear LSO to the house.

House is terraced and made of concrete.

Draytek rocks, but is EXPENSIVE.

But you get what u pay for.

My Belkin works from the back bedroom of a victorian terrace all over the
house and most of the outside. It even works 3 doors down in a neighbours
house! The signal isn't great from the next door but 2 neighbours, but it is
perfectly useable.

Locating the router as high up as possible helps the range, I reckon.

My WG602 (netgear) doesn't appear brilliant; the AP is about 40/50
feet away behind a breezblock and brick wall. Signal eratic, sometimes
I get it and sometimes it fails.

I have heard that high up is better, I will try repositioning when my
extension is finished.

Agreed, I have a 2600We, and the wireless side works consistantly well,
from the other end of the house, and even round the nextdoor neighors
with the laptop... (that impressed the hell out of him...)

What limits working distance is radio interference and radio noise to wanted
signal power ratio.

Signal strength decreases fast according to square of distance. But the
interference and noise level remains more or less the same.

At UHF it gets in through facing windows. Glass and curtains might as well
not be there.

Did you buy it or make it, Paul?
